As you may remember I got a boxer for my birthday back in February but that which should have been straight forward turned out to have a few unexpected bends in the road. See a family in our church was having boxer puppies and I was going to get one of theirs. I waited for the puppies to be born and then the puppy that I chose (Mio) died at two weeks so I chose another puppy (Amante) and I was waiting for him to get big enough to take home.
Meantime Nolan (one of our beagles) lost his collar in the yard then it got chewed up, luckily we buy a brand of collar at our local pet store that is guaranteed for life. So I took the chewed up collar in to get my free replacement and while I was there I decided to ask the owner for details about puppy class and other available training. I explained that we wanted our new boxer to be specially trained to help me get up in the yard and maybe help carry a few things by wearing a back pack sometimes.
The very nice man explained to me all of the reasons why a puppy might not be the best idea, I totally agreed with him but didn't think I had any other options. The man went on to say that he had raised boxers for 50 years and he had a show dog at the moment that was not showing well in front of the judges. He said that the dog already walked beautifully on a leash and was a good fit for me because of his strength and sweet disposition. The best part was that he offered to sell me the dog at a price I could actually afford-- I don't remember the last time I felt so blessed and so conflicted at the same time. Blessed by the man at the pet store and conflicted because the people with the puppies were dear friends. They were giving us the puppy as a gift, so the last thing that I wanted to do was offend them. In the end I decided that the opportunity to get an older dog was too good to pass up! Our friends were great and they were not offended at all Praise God!
So - Kane came to live with us, he is beautiful and I am amazed by the generosity of the pet store man and his wife!!
